Why come to see me for Naturopathic care, when you are feeling well?

Most people put off seeking help for their health until they are not healthy.  You can understand the reasoning – the standard medical model trains us for this, to treat acute issues with acute care.  This is a reactionary model, and only works when you can return to good health with ease.

For many people, a more pro-active model works better.  This takes the form of eating well, doing regular exercise, and seeking to keep your body working at it’s best with regular remedial massage, and checking in with your naturopath before problems occur.

With most patients, when I see them they have a few acute issues, which we target.  After this, it is important to continue to manage problems before they occur.  You know the ones – the poor sleep, the ongoing headaches, the low grade allergies, or lack of immune resilience.   These are the bigger picture issues.  There is also the litany of issues such as dry skin, dry eyes, itchy scalp, cramps in the feet, restless legs, which become so “normal” that we don’t even think to mention them to anyone, to avoid looking like a hypochondriac.  Even bigger issues like fatigue, or gut discomfort get overlooked, if we are too accustomed to feeling less than our best.

Initial treatment period:

  • Usually over 12-16 weeks, with a long initial appointment, a follow up around 2-3 weeks later, then 2-3 follow up appointments to check progress.
  • At the end of this period, assuming most issues are largely resolved, it is possible to just come by to collect supplements as needed.  It is possible to set up a supplement prescription with an online ordered system, so that you can order as you need products which are then delivered to you.

Ongoing health management:

  • Many patients choose to continue to visit me for remedial massage, to do a quick check in, and get products as appropriate.
  • My usual suggestion for existing patients, after we have resolved the initial issues which brought them in to see me, is to return after about 3 months in order to check that the prescribed treatment is still working.  At this appointment, it can be a good time to check in, to see what else is not satisfactory in terms of your overall wellness.
  • Visiting every 6 months can be helpful, both to check in on how the initial problem has resolved, and also to ensure that other issues have not taken hold.

Longterm support:

  • If you are not coming in for regular massage, it is important to come back every 12 months, if you are continuing to take the products, in order to check that they are the most effective, or need changing.
  • It is important to recognise that our needs change as we go through different ages.  Moving out through the decades should be given the respect and care that it deserves.  Ignoring symptoms, or believing that because you will always bounce back, ignores the fact that our health changes and listening to change helps to adapt better.
  • Not all products should be taken long term, and will always need to checked if you have started taking any medication, for interactions.
  • It can be helpful to recognise annual events which are triggers for health or emotional responses.  Having jobs which peak at the predictable times of the year (teachers, accountants) allows you to book in before the event so that you can fend off issues, and manage the stress and support your immunity.

I am always happy to see patients at whatever timing suits them, and have many patients who come in for a check in and chat, and debrief from their lives.  Bookings are best made online at www.reviveyourhealth.com.au, and click on “Book Now”.
